United Way officials today announced receipt of an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant in the amount of $378,300 –over five years – to establish a new Chatham-Kent Nonprofit Network. Funds will be used to hire a Project Co-Ordinator to bring public attention to the value of the nonprofit sector in Chatham-Kent and to enhance its capacity to improve lives and build community. In addition, the project will document the local nonprofit sector’s contribution to economic well-being in ways that are not currently recognized and bring recognition to the efforts of the sector in proactively responding to emerging issues.
In November of 2013, the Ontario Nonprofit Network invited United Way to host a Regional Meeting – during which a number of nonprofit attendees expressed interest in establishing a similar organization at the local level. A small steering committee was subsequently formed and a grant application was submitted to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for the March 1st 2014 deadline.

United Way of Chatham-Kent is pleased to welcome Asia Aoki to our Staff Team as a summer co-op student from Ursuline College, The Pines. Asia came to United Way to enhance her passion for marketing and communication – specifically photography. She is active in her school choir, student council and student musicals and has performed in the Sears Drama Festival. In addition, she volunteers at Muskoka Woods Camp and works at the Portuguese Club, tutoring and volunteering. Stay tuned as United Way releases the materials produced by Asia during her summer placement with us. PROJECT CO-ORDINATOR – CHATHAM-KENT NONPROFIT NETWORK
(Full Time, Five-Year Contract Position)
United Way of Chatham-Kent – in partnership with several representatives of the nonprofit community – is looking for a passionate, committed individual to lead an exciting new project designed to bring public attention to value of the nonprofit sector in Chatham-Kent and to enhance its capacity to improve lives and build community.
Working closely with the Ontario Nonprofit Network, the successful candidate will develop a strong and vibrant network of local nonprofits. The successful candidate will develop and promote teamwork, collaboration and partnerships. Key to the success of the project will be the sharing of experiences, resources, information and lessons learned.
You want to …
– identify the number of nonprofit organizations throughout Chatham-Kent
– identify the needs of local nonprofit organizations
– build capacity within the nonprofit sector by providing training opportunities for both staff and volunteers of local nonprofits
– educate business and government partners about the socioeconomic value of the nonprofit sector in Chatham-Kent
– liaise with neighbouring nonprofits who can benefit from, and provide input to, the enhancement of local capacity
– research and identify best practices in nonprofit governance
– organize and deliver professional development opportunities and training
– disseminate findings to the community through focus groups, workshops, seminars and special events
– leverage existing communication tools or develop new versions to “connect” with those individuals working and volunteering in the nonprofit sector
– gather stories and personal testimonials about how nonprofit representatives are making long-lasting measurable change in society
– organize and attend regular meetings of the Chatham-Kent Nonprofit Network Advisory Committee; take and transcribe minutes
– participate and provide feedback in the evaluation of short-term, intermediate and long-term outcomes of the Project
– work with all sectors of the community (business, government and voluntary) to achieve Project outcomes
– nurture collaboration among community organizations

– a Post-Secondary Degree or College Diploma in Social Services
– a Certificate in Non-Profit Management (a definite asset!)

– project management experience
– strong computer and reporting skills

– a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle
– a supportive family who understands the need for evening and weekend commitments … and
– a sense of humour!
This five-year contract position will commence on or about 2014 SEP 01. Your office will be located at “The 425” – United Way’s Centre for Community Innovation in Chatham but travel will be required throughout Chatham-Kent.
