Tony Walsh and his wife Emily Durbin are the Co-Chairs for the THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING United Way Chatham-Kent 2011 Annual Campaign. Their Touchdown event was held in conjunction with a celebration for the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s funding for UWOCK and the resulting re-launch of “The 425” – United Way’s Centre for Community Innovation.

The 2011 campaign achievement is $1,877,074. “While our total is about 6% short of the $2 million goal” said Tony, “we are extremely proud of the volunteers and staff for helping raise this phenomenal amount of money. Emily and I have learned so much more about the work of the agencies, programs and services available to everyone in communities all across Chatham-Kent. United Way’s financial support for these services marks the 64th year that our Annual Fundraiser has worked to provide local dollars in service to our community. Obviously, we are so pleased to be a part of another amazing fundraising achievement”.

“We are all well aware of the economic difficulties being experienced locally” said Tony. “Nevertheless, donors from across Chatham-Kent dug deep in support of the community impact work happening with and through our United Way. The positive result – and we do feel very positive about the amount raised and the number of donors and organizations and workplaces who stepped up to help the campaign – reflects the generosity of the community during these uncertain times. In the last 20 years, per capita, Chatham-Kent has consistently donated at one of the top levels in Canada. Once again Chatham-Kent stepped up. ”

Emily supports Tony’s remarks. “When we set the goal last summer we anticipated there would be challenges. We had seen first-hand the increases in services being provided and the programs being developed to support and assist those in our community needing some help. Through-out the campaign, new donors and new workplaces, including my own workplace, stepped forward to help. Unfortunately, some traditional worksites, special events and former donors were unable to help at the same level as in previous years. Our hearts go out to all those experiencing difficult times”.

“Emily and I – and Harry – want to thank United Way for the chance to lead this campaign” said Tony. “To all those who contributed to the $1,877,074 result please, take note that for those citizens in our community who will use one or more of the programs you have helped to support. THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING – it truly does. Thank you all”.
