The final tally is in for the funds raised by the United Way Youth Ambassadors during their annual Red Feather Week. $20,060.36 dollars were raised through various in-school fund raisers organized by the Youth Ambassadors, event entrance fees, and other donations.
“When we first started planning these events the youth set a goal of raising $20,000 for the Community Fund” said Erica Kitchen, the Youth Engagement Co-Ordinator at United Way. “I am proud of the leadership demonstrated by the 20 Youth Ambassadors. Their hard work and determination as well as the generosity of the students, staff, and community has helped make this goal a reality. It is rewarding to see these young leaders take such pride in the community of Chatham-Kent.”
Once the schools completed their in-school campaigns, there were two final awards presented at the following committee meeting- Most Dollars Raised by an Individual School and Most Dollars Raised by an Individual School Per Capita. This year École secondaire de Pain Court earned both these awards. Jamie Faubert, grade 12 student and third year Youth Ambassador said “ESPC raising the most money for this year’s Red Feather campaign is proof that our little family should never be underestimated. We may be small in numbers, but what we lack in size we make up for in generosity.” Faubert went on to talk about his experience – “Being a United Way Youth Ambassador is a huge privilege. I am more aware of all that United Way does and the needs of the Chatham-Kent community. I feel lucky that I can use this as a platform to learn, help, and advocate with such a great group of ambitious students.”
During the week of September 15 to 20, 2014 the youth from the ten local high schools competed in sporting events and activities to show their school spirit. A full list of event winners can be found at www.uwock.ca/red-feather-weekend-2/ .
