At their April 30 AGM, Cecily Coppola, Co-Chairs for United Way’s 2013 Fundraising Campaign with William Grin, welcomed the incoming leadership team.

Co-Chairing in 2014 are Margery and Dean Muharrem. The Muharrem family moved to Chatham-Kent from London England in 1992 and “we have never looked back”.  They have two teenage daughters, Christine and Rachel, who are said to be their pride and joy “giving us wrinkles and grey hair and many wonderful special moments we will treasure forever”.

Margery is one busy woman.  In addition to close family ties, Margery has run her Professional Party Planners business for the past 6 years and, in 2013, took the plunge with Dean and his brother into the restaurant business – The Grand Castle Café next door to Ursuline College – The Pines. She is equally passionate about her community. She volunteered for several non-profit organizations and her most recent role was with Victim Services, where she was a crisis responder, and then, for over five years, a Team Leader.  “I like people and I like the community. I am very excited to Co-Chair the 2014 Campaign with Dean.  Chatham-Kent is such a wonderful community to live in and sometimes we just don’t realize how good we have it. United Way is truly an excellent way for all of us to support what we truly believe in”.

Since 1996, when Dean first started his career with Sun Media, he has worked his way to his current position as Publisher and Director of Sun Media for all Sun Media Publications in C-K.

When not working, Dean is a self-confessed foodie and is always willing to try new foods.  He enjoys volleyball and soccer (football as he calls it) and is a die-hard England Fan holding out hope that perhaps this year’s World Cup will be England’s. Dean has also been involved with a number of charity organizations.  His most recent involvement is with Junior Achievement, where he is proud to have delivered over 10 classes to local schools.

“Chatham-Kent is a great place to live, and United Way is a great charitable organization. I’m very proud and honoured to be named Co-Chair with my wife Margery for 2014. We are truly dedicated to raising awareness and money for UWOCK’s many community impact services.”

In the coming weeks, Margery and Dean will recruit and train their 2014 volunteers. “We will be visiting the agencies, key community partners and many dedicated volunteers.  Our 2014 goal will be announced in September.  Together, our communities can build on the tremendous efforts and achievements of William and Cecily’s 2013 campaign.  Yet we need to do more – and you can help.”
